Lewisburg Borough is a community of 5,620 in Union County, Pennsylvania. The county of 41,624 residents, like many other rural counties, offers a wide variety of living, employment and recreational experiences. Lewisb
urg Borough population dipped slightly from 1990 but county planning predicts slight and steady increases in population beyond 2010. Evangelical Community Hospital, Bucknell University, and the Federal Prison System are major employers for Lewisburg and all of Union County. Lewisburg, in the east end of the county, has positioned itself as central Pennsylvania’s cultural center. Larger downtown districts exist, but Lewisburg bordered by the Susquehanna River, Bucknell University and Route 15 offers a unique blend of easy accessibility, Bucknell’s varied cultural and intellectual influences, and natural scenic beauty. The downtown, extremely walkable at only six blocks, offers a variety of dining and bar options, plus the Campus Theatre, an original Art Deco Movie palace, several museums, and over 40 retail shops with a home accent cluster, as well as an arts-related cluster that includes galleries, art supplies and art lessons.
Downtown Lewisburg’s customer base consists of three major segments: 40% of its users live in the 17837 zip code, which includes the Borough, adjoining East Buffalo and Kelly Townships. 34% live in surrounding communities within a 30 minute drive and the remaining 26% are visitors from more than 60 miles away. The median home value in the county is $97,000. East Buffalo Township has the highest home values in the county at $143,900. Lewisburg Borough homes are eight to ten thousand dollars higher than other boroughs and townships in the county. Not surprisingly, with its proximity to Bucknell University, the percentage of the population with a bachelor’s and/or a post-graduate degree is substantially higher than the rest of the county. More than 25% of the East Buffalo and Lewisburg Borough populations have college degrees, well over double the median percentage of the county population.
