Buffalo Valley Recreation Authority (BVRec)

Buffalo Valley Recreation Authority (formerly LARA)

BVRec is a not-for-profit organization that offers a wide variety of recreation options to the greater Lewisburg area.

1.  The Buffalo Valley Rail Trail (BVRT) is the result of investment by the Buffalo Valley Recreation Authority (formerly LARA), Union County, Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Federal Highway Department.   After several years of planning, BVRA acquired the right of way from the West Shore Rail Road for the rail line from Northumberland County to Mifflinburg. Construction began in the spring of 2011.

Phase I, included 9.2 miles of finished trail, trailheads, facilities and parking at both ends was completed at the end of October 2011. The long-awaited introduction of the trail revolutionizes non-motorized transportation and broadens the recreational options immensely in Union County.

As the first developed off-road trail in the area, the trail provides an amenity entirely absent until now and becomes a crucial component of the transportation network. Whereas before only the bold could venture on foot or by bike beyond the core residential streets of the central municipalities, there is now a protected, well-designed infrastructure available to serve all ages and abilities, whether for recreation or transportation.

The Buffalo Valley Rail Trail Parallels Rt 45, and has provided our community a great way to travel without a motor vehicle.

2.  It operates the Lewisburg Recreation Park on St. Mary’s Street, just west of Route 15, which includes a world-class skate park, rock climb, community pool, picnic pavilion and outdoor skating rink (weather permitting). Nature provided the meandering stream and the ducks. The skate park and rock climb were donated to the community by one of its major employers, Playworld Systems, Inc.

3.  BVRec also operates a full schedule of recreational classes from gymnastics to film production, hosts recreational team sports, organizes an annual Triathlon in September for kids and adults and the annual Lewisburg Lights 5K, an race through historic downtown Lewisburg at dusk in September. The organization is managing an exciting rail trail project that will link Mifflinburg to Lewisburg and eventually to the Susquehanna River.
